The Challenge

At the beginning of 2022, we started with support in change management from dpa to conceptualize the spatial design. The goal was to reflect the organizational structures and functions while creating an inspiring meeting place for journalism. Insights from the pandemic waves and the adapted working methods were given particular consideration.

The integration of new and state-of-the-art audio and video studios, as well as the execution of the project within a tight timeline, posed exciting challenges, which we tackled as an interdisciplinary team.

The Solution

In the division of the two floors, we placed the communicative center on the open-designed ground floor. This area now provides space for meetings, exchanges, and events. It includes audio and video studios, workshop areas, retreat rooms, and a bar. A central element is the flexible atrium. With its high ceiling, it provides natural light to the entire space.

The atrium forms the centerpiece of the space, where large events and gatherings take place. Adjacent to the atrium are the newsstudios for video, audio, and podcasts production.

The new dpa headquarters is a modern, well-equipped space for meetings and work in journalism in the 21st century.

The view from the upper office floor into the atrium is impressive. Large platform areas offer space for up to 60 people.

Interior Design

“The round must fit into the square.” With this statement from dpa, our considerations for the interior design concept began.

The rounded shapes in the design are naturally inspired by the dots in the dpa logo but also lend the rooms a natural and harmonious aesthetic. This is reflected in the central area of the atrium, but also, for example, in the design of the bar, which functions as a meeting point and communication hub, symbolizing the open and communicative corporate culture.

A glance into the multifunctional workshop room reveals the fully glazed interiors. These receive natural light from the atrium but can be closed off with curtains when needed.
The bar radiates a special coziness with its warm colors and abundant wood.

Lighting also played a crucial role in the design. The round light fixtures are a deliberate response to the rounded furniture and reinforce the harmonious overall look. The functional arrangement in our new office design is carefully thought out. Relaxation areas and workstations are decentralized to promote a flexible and dynamic working environment. This structure supports collaboration and allows for optimal space usage. Colors were subtly used as accents to make the space lively and inspiring without being overwhelming.

The workshop room is equipped with flexible furniture, making it highly adaptable for various use scenarios.
Open work areas and cozy retreat spaces alternate.
